What are Neurotoxins?

LNeurotoxins are injectable solutions of botulinumToxinA that temporarily block receptors in the muscle and relax the muscle movement. This blocking action prevents lines and wrinkles from forming due to repeat folding and creasing of the skin. As of 2023, there are currently five botulinumToxinA products that are FDA approved in the United States including Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Daxxify.

Where can Neurotoxins be used?

The most common areas treated with toxins are the glabella which are the frown lines between the eyes, the forehead, and the lateral canthal lines, also know as the “crow’s feet.” In addition to those areas, we can also use toxin to treat clenching and grinding of the teeth, soften vertical band lines in the neck, create an eye brow lift, reduce a gummy smile, “lip flip” a smile that curls inward in pictures, and more. Another benefit of getting neurotoxin in the face is that it reduces sweating of the forehead when exercising, and lowers oil production in the skin which can help treat and prevent acne breakouts. Botox can even be injected into trigger points to alleviate tension in tight muscles.

What are the differences between Neurotoxins and fillers?

  • Botox works to reduce the appearance of lines that are visible when you are smiling, frowning, or squinting and stops new ones from forming.
  • Fillers treat deeper lines and wrinkles that are present even when the face is at rest.
  • Botox reduces muscle movementFillers plump and fill the skin while replacing and stimulating the production of collagen.
  • Fillers plump and fill the skin while replacing and stimulating the production of collagen.
  • Botox injections will show results in 3-5 days and will last approximately 3-6 months.
  • Fillers provide instant results and can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.

What to expect

Your first appointment takes about 30 minutes. You and the specialist will discuss how much neurotoxin you will need and in which areas. We will carefully identify and mark the areas to be treated. If you’re concerned about discomfort, we can use ice or a numbing cream to numb the targeted area(s). Then we will use a narrow micro-needle to inject directly into the facial muscles.

Recovery & Results

Neurotoxins require no initial downtime or recovery period & you’ll be able to resume most of your normal activities immediately after your treatment. You should begin to notice results in the first week following treatment. In rare cases, the neurotoxin can migrate to other muscles in the body. To avoid this possibility, we ask that you follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid rubbing the treated areas
  • Do not lie down for 4 hours
  • following treatment
  • Wait 24 hours to exercise or
  • engage in any strenuous
  • activity.
